HippFest Launch

Pictures to coincide with the launch of this year's HippFest Silent Film Festival at The Hippodrome in Bo'ness, The launch took place at the Rosebank Distillery in Falkirk, where Festival Director Alison Strauss marked 15 years of HippFest with a celebratory nip of Rosebank Lowland Single Malt . Pictures in The Scotsman and Falkirk Herald. I wasn't permitted to be in the same room as Alison due to the whisky production process, so a long lens was the way to go. First exhibition of 2025 underway

Hello, the first exhibition of 2025 is underway and I have a work in the current "Architecture" exhibition at The Glasgow Gallery of Photography at their location at 279-281 High St, Glasgow. The Gallery is open 12-4pm Wednesday to Saturday and runs until 31/01/25. The image I have on display is one of The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

I had a bit of moving around between locations to get the ideal setup as not everyone wants to be photographed so if you visualise how things are going to be, they often don't happen! It all worked out well. Patience is one of the main requirements of my job. Thanks to all that helped!

Lindsays Cross Country Championships event photography

Here are some pictures from the recent Lindsays XC Championship meeting at Callander Park in Falkirk, a large number of clubs took part at age levels from U13 up to senior. The pace was frantic and the conditions were fairly kind to the runners, as no mudbaths appeared to be taken!

Portraits of Dr Liza Morton to promote her new book

I recently photographed Dr Liza Morton, a Chartered Counselling Psychologist who is a member of the British Psychological Society’s (BPS) Counselling Psychology Division.

Dr Morton is the co-author of "Healing Hearts & Minds" (with Tracy Livecchi), the first book to focus on the psychosocial, emotional and practical challenges in living with Congenital Heart Disease. She was (at the time) the youngest person in the world to receive a heart pacemaker in 1978 when she was only 11 days old, at the amazing Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow where my daughter underwent open heart surgery. I had to work quickly (as usual!) but liked the wooden feature in her hallway and devised a mixed lighting setup.

Buglife!

Buglife is working in partnership with Falkirk Council Rangers to restore a local bog. A team of volunteers will be removing Lodgepole pine scrub from the bog, with the idea that volunteers will be able to take some home as an ethical Christmas tree. Pictured is Melissa Shaw of Buglife.

I feared the worst when I arrived at this job when I saw a volunteer pouring water out of his wellies(!) It turns out he fell in the bog so I got away with it!

Here are some pictures from the grand re-opening of Zetland Park in Grangemouth. I lost count of all the amazing activities. There was the duck race in the burn, Bug hunts, a fire engine to clamber aboard, toasting marshmallows, VR exploring, bug hunts, choir singing, music performances, Dog competitions, recycling for kids, football, American Football, Cycling Without Age Scotland, Community Police saying hello, Cllr Meiklejohn and Queen Kira to officially cut the ribbon on the new stage, a double flag raising and so much more. The Zetland Park Project team/Friends of Zetland Park are a credit to the community and what they have achieved is astonishing. Some of the best community-based events are now a regular thing at Zetland Park so keep an eye out for what's next. They usually have seasonal fairs with activities matching the time of year. Event photography from Laurieston Special Forces Day

Here are some pictures from the recent Special Forces Day in Laurieston, organised by the Ancre Somme Association. One year ago, a memorial was unveiled to John Thomas "Mac" McAleese, of 22 SAS (Special Air Service), who was one of the soldiers involved in ending the Iranian Embassy siege in London in 1980. News footage of this event famously interrupted the World Snooker Final and the live pictures showed the SAS troops moving over the balcony to start Operation Nimrod. It is believed that John was the first soldier to make his way into the embassy, which was revealed years after due to the secrecy surrounding the work of the SAS. A parade was held, with Cllr Buchanan carrying one of the standards to remember the work of all Special Forces. In the words of Cllr Buchanan "There is no doubt whatsoever that Britain's Elite Special Forces have saved hundreds of lives across the world and here in the United Kingdom. We will remember those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice and their families" HM Lord Lieutenant Alan Simpson and MSP Richard Leonard spoke in their own tributes. The speakers have a vast experience across the investing world and spoke about the effects of pandemic and more recently, conflict in Europe and gave their insight in a packed Q&A on topics such as cryptocurrency. William McIntyre, Lawyer and Novelist

Hi there I haven't posted any pictures in a while so I will start getting into the backlog. I photographed the lawyer and novelist William McIntyre, whose latest book "Best Defence" tells the story of a footballer's wife who is charged with murder. It is the latest in his series of books featuring the character Robbie Munro. In this latest novel, William features his self-declared number one fan Russell MacGillivray. Russell appears as a detective sergeant and I photographed the two together at Falkirk Sheriff Court.

An interesting bit that William told me about the book is he was concerned about the timing of its release due to the plans to scrap the "Not Proven" verdict. The consultation dedicated to the verdict closed last month.

Hello Again Happy New Year 2022

Hello again, this is my first blog post of 2022, so I hope this New Year is treating you all well. I am confident this year will be better than last year and much better than 2020! Pleased to get 2022 of to a good start with this front page pic for the Edinburgh Evening News for 1st January. It's quite a random thing to try and set up a pic of a couple kissing but it's all part of my job! I was looking for subjects and there they were, hurrying along Princes St to meet friends and they kindly agreed to set up this picture. There were a few people about but a lot of Edinburgh's Streets that are traditionally packed with people on Hogmanay were eerily empty due to the cancellation of the official street party due to Covid restrictions.

Edinburgh Evening News Local Hero Awards 2021

I haven't done a blog post for a while so here are some photographs from The Edinburgh Evening News Local Hero Awards, held at The Edinburgh Sheraton Hotel recently and were hosted by Arlene Stuart. The awards were won by a wide variety of ages from the junior Local Heroes right up to a 99 year old volunteer. We had The Community Champion, we had Fundraiser of the year, Health Champion and Sustainable School of the year. The Local Hero award was won by 26 year old Olivia Strong, who also won Fundraiser of The Year, after raising £7million for the NHS via her Run For Heroes fundraising challenge on social media, asking people to run 5k, donate £5 and nominate 5 others to do the same. Olivia's fundraiser went from strength to strength and after raising £7million for the NHS she has been awarded the MBE and is looking to do more. Well done to Olivia and all the award winners. Costume Designer Lynn Buys, photography to promote "Ya Wee Sleeping Beauty" Pantomime

Here are the final pictures from work I did recently to promote the pantomime "Ya Wee Sleeping Beauty" which has started its run at Kirkcaldy Kings Theatre. This time I photographed costume designer Lynn Buys at her workshop which was superb for pictures as she had everything ready and even had a wee helper in her bonnie wee granddaughter. Particularly of local interest is the Raith Rovers "bikini" costume for all those looking in from Kirkcaldy way! I was pleased with the results of staying outside the workshop and using off-camera flash to give the subjects more dimension than just hitting people with lots of flash square-on from the camera.

Pictures this time featuring Nourish Support Centre CEO Lynne Scott who was superb, nothing was a problem when I was asking "do this do that" and she posed with Hooter the talking owl from the panto. Promo pics for the "Sponsor The Sparkle" campaign being run by LinkLiving at West Bridge MIll in Kirkcaldy. Local businesses have been sponsoring large LED stars placed on the gable of the mill for the Festive Season. I used a bit of off-camera flash to combine some ambient light from the sky and then light the subject. I Had to work super quick and spent most of the short time I had lying on the road trying to not get run over. It's almost the shot I was after as the road hemmed us in. I would have preferred some distance from the building to shoot wider and make it more dramatic with a bit more sky but I had to have it done in about five minutes!

I photographed the Diwali 2021 parade on Sunday 21/11/21 and as expected there were plenty colourful costumes on parade to be photographed, as well as the armed forces bands in a more muted grey livery! The performers did their thing in St Andrew Square with The Lord Provost Frank Ross in attendance, and then the parade moved along George St and into Castle Street where the performances continued, and then more acts were on show at The Ross Bandstand in Princes St Gardens

Scotsman Green Skills Conference 2021

I photographed The Scotsman Green Skills Conference 2021 at The Royal College of Physicians in Queen Street, Edinburgh. It was a fast-paced event lasting a full day and featured several panel discussions and also some breakout discussions into other rooms. Something of a hybrid event with delegates attending in-person and viewing online, this will be the shape of things to come as we navigate through the Covid pandemic, but it was great to be covering a face-to-face event of this nature. The event was chaired by Dave Reay of Edinburgh Climate Change Institute, and featured speakers such as Lorna Slater MSP, Kirsty Summers of the Scotch Whisky Association, Neil McIntosh Editor of The Scotsman, Sian Lloyd-Rees MD of Aker Offshore Wind UK and Joanne Allday of Port of Cromarty Firth. Supernova 5k event photography

I was photographing the runners at the Supernova Night 5K running event this month at Helix Park in Falkirk. All the runners run in the dark wearing headtorches around The Kelpies at Helix Park in Falkirk. Instead of photographing running shots I was doing portraits at the finish, and used a bit of off-camera flash to try and make the pictures look a bit more like a studio rather than the usual event photography method of having the flash mounted on the camera. Scottish Canals event photography at The Lighthouse, Glasgow
